A CHILL SPACE
This one-of-a kind Welch Cabin is 90 feet atop the fabled 'Holy Waters' of the freestone Kalama River. Nineteen acres of preserved forest with easy access to the gin-clear water. For 22 years the Cabin has been 'off the grid'. In 2022 we completed renovations that retain the wilderness aspects yet add important conveniences; processed water from our creek, 'his' and 'her' Bio-Toilets along with hot showers, fridge/freezer, internet and a full kitchen.
Our Cabin is 10 miles from the village of Kalama WA on the paved, curvy Kalama River Road. Our 19 private acres are in full conservation easement with no neighbors in sight. The forest has fully mature trees: douglas fir, western red cedar, giant sequoia and hemlock, with a variety of hardwoods and wild flowers. If you slow down you will hear nature: song birds and eagles, water rushing through wild rapids, a cougar scream or a bolt of lightning arcing into the nearby mountain tops. And best of all, a gentle mountain breeze in the fir trees that soar 50 feet immediately above our sun deck.

TWO DECKS
Two decks, one for dining and sunning, and another for a private outdoor shower and biffy with a world class view. A sturdy hammock sits on the deck atop the gin-clear river below. You can look down 90 feet into the pools and rapids or up into the treetops that soar 60 feet overhead. We idly count migrating steelhead from the deck rail.
KITCHEN
Basic kitchen has utensils, a new gas stove and an oven. A freezer/fridge provides storage for your perishables and ice for your drinks. Spring water is worth bottling to take home. Inside sit down dining for five, with additional dining on the deck aside the fire and river.
SETTING
Welch Cabin sits on the Kalama River in the middle of 19 private acres of forests and wildlife. It is God's garden, nearly unspoiled and absolutely quiet and private. Pets are welcomed, but ALWAYS check with us first.

Fly Fishing
Our guests fly fish for steelhead and salmon and rainbow trout on a private water access. Strictly managed water means this is all catch and release, barbless fishing. Fishing is yearlong and holds challenging and beginner water. A sandbar below the cabin, within sight of the deck, is perfect to teach beginners the art of casting.
The Volcano

We are honored to be a favorite ‘residence’ for visitors for the Mt St Helens Institute. Hiking and exploring the volcano is a rare opportunity, and we will assist you with your volcano plans. Check all the options available with the institute and read their most recent newsletter.
Kayaking - Tubing - Rafting
Experienced kayakers will find moderate challenges: we have rapids and fast channels as well as a mile or so of backeddies, rock gardens, fast narrows, and gentle pools with a beach or two for a sit down! Float tubes, inner tubes, kayaks, they all work, and best of all our partners at BigFoot Kayak Rentals give you a 25% discount on your rentals, AND deliver them to you at the river. Just tell them you are guests at the Welch Cabin.
Hiking - Ecotouring - Geocaching
Welch Cabin is smack dab in the middle of our own 19 private acres and our 19 acres are smack dab in the middle of hundreds of square miles of mountainous Weyerhaeuser forest. Private roads and abundant trails cut through the forest to creeks and rivers. Here are simple and easy hikes with frequent sightings of Roosevelt Elk herds, blacktail deer, black bears (not so frequent), porkies and the abundant Bald Eagles, herons and other bird life.
